Traveling Toilet Seats
by Sharon Daszczynski

Caroline Raville asked me to write a short article regarding a product that I have found invaluable as I travel to visit relatives and friends and stop at hotels and motels that don’t always have handicapped facilities available.

I purchased a portable toilet seat after traveling across country without one. The seat can be attached to any toilet by raising the toilet seat and lid and placing the portable seat on the porcelain beneath the seat. The portable seat attaches to the bowl with a plastic screw that anchors it to the front of the toilet bowl so that it doesn’t move. The portable seat has attached metal arms with padded grips so that you can raise and lower yourself easily. It also has the added convenience of raising the level of the seat about four inches so that you don’t have to lower yourself as much as you would on a regular toilet seat. It can be carried in an opaque plastic garbage bag so that nobody can tell what it is and it is easy to clean. I carry a packet of disposable anti-bacterial cleaning cloths with me and use them to clean the seat before placing it back in its "travel case." I usually remove the seat and clean it and place it in the tub so that the cleaning staff of the motel can clean the toilet each day while I am out of the room.

I hope this "tip" is helpful. I know how frustrating it is to travel, especially when relatives want you to visit and you have to ask them what their bathroom facility looks like so you can decide whether you can use it. This portable seat has literally opened many doors for me!
